A sweet emotional poem composed by someone:
I went to a party Mom,
I remembered what you said.
You told me not to drink, Mom,
So I drank soda instead.
I really felt proud inside, Mom,
The way you said I would.
I didn't drink and drive, Mom,
Even though the others said I should.
I know I did the right thing, Mom,
I know you are always right.
Now the party is finally ending, Mom,
As everyone is driving out of sight.
As I got into my car, Mom,
I knew I'd get home in one piece.
Because of the way you raised me,
So responsible and sweet..
I started to drive away, Mom,
But as I pulled out into the road,
The other car didn't see me, Mom,
And hit me like a load.
As I lay there on the pavement, Mom,
I hear the policeman say,
"The other guy is drunk," Mom,
And now I'm the one who will pay.
I'm lying here dying, Mom....
I wish you'd get here soon.
How could this happen to me, Mom?
My life just burst like a balloon..
There is blood all around me, Mom,
And most of it is mine.
I hear the medic say, Mom,
I'll die in a short time.
I just wanted to tell you, Mom,
I swear I didn't drink.
It was the others, Mom.
The others didn't think.
He was probably at the same party as I.
The only difference is, he drank
And I will die.
Why do people drink, Mom?
It can ruin your whole life.
I'm feeling sharp pains now.
Pains just like a knife.
The guy who hit me is walking, Mom,
And I don't think it's fair.
I'm lying here dying
And all he can do is stare.
Tell my brother not to cry, Mom.
Tell Daddy to be brave.
And when I go to heaven, Mom,
Put "GOOD BOY " on my grave.
Someone should have told him, Mom,
Not to drink and drive.
If only they had told him, Mom,
I would still be alive.
My breath is getting shorter, Mom.
I'm getting very scared.
Please don't cry for me, Mom.
When I needed you, you were always there.
I have one last question, Mom.
Before I say good bye.
I didn't drink and drive,
So why am I the one to die?

Haule Haule
I was watching this Ad on T.V where a smart young man shows (off) his chivalry and let others go ahead and keeps on saying"After U". But when it comes to driving his car back home he junks his chivalry and zooms past a bamboozled young girl who looks at him in amazement. But I bet ya guys that if something like that happens with any of us the charmer would have got a mouthful.
Everybody is in a hurry, wants to just fly over others and reach their office, home etc. The number of cars and bikes on the road and the poorly designed and inadequate roads add to his misery. The distances are growing as the city grows and offices are getting farther away from home.As a result there are instances of road rage which can be really ugly experiences.
There is absolutely no traffic sense prevailing and all of us including the rich and poor, literate and illiterate, law keepers and law breakers, men and women break rules (with a few exceptions of course). To add to this there are people who love to drink and then go for a drive.
Drinking and driving is like a gamble which thankfully pays off most of the times. But when it does'nt it can be a disaster.
The traffic police is helpless due to lack of staffing, technical support and motivation. The rate of conviction is pathetic and laws are lenient to the offenders.
There is no respite.
As a result traffic is becoming a major problem for every city and town and is a cause of accidents and death. Every year road accidents kill more than 20000 people in India and most of these are working people who have young chilren, old parents and other dependents to feed.
But does anyone care. All we do is take an insurance policy which can at best provide some financial assistance in case of death or disability but nothing can replace the loss of a loved one.
One thing that can be done is to make traffic follow strict lane rules in major cities and exemplary fines for violation. Cameras can be put on the traffic lights so that offenders can be nabbed. RTO offices can share data so that outside state vehicle owners can also be nabbed. And yes the driving licence should be cancelled for serial offenders.
The police has to be provided adequate support in terms of Breathalysers and proper vehicles. The police needs to be sensitised and also motivated to perform their duties honestly. Also a portion of the fines collected can be used for providing better facilities to the policemen.
But the real problem is lack of public sensitivity. It is not bad to drink but then why not have a driver when u know that u r going to be sloshed. Why not avoid honking when you know that the traffic is going slow and why not wait for the light to turn green when u know it would not take long. These are simple questions that no one likes to answer because we are too preoccupied with our lives and think that we have the most important jobs to reach to, most imortant parties to attend and the busiest lives.
Alas! we dont think like a civilised society yet.....
